A Playlist of Rough Trade Records Essentials

Rough Trade as a record label turned 40 last week, and it's impossible to downplay their importance in shaping indie music as a genre. Set up in the wake of punk, over the past 40 years they've propped up indie music, shaped its direction and released some of the most incredible music of all time. So without banging on about it too much, here's a playlist of tracks that you just simply need to hear.

Spanning from their post-punk inception to the present day (boasting now one of music's strongest rosters with such bands as Parquet Courts, Warpaint and Sleaford Mods), this is a playlist of what I think is just about the 12 strongest Rough Trade songs to date. Probably. Well, maybe not, but it's more of a playlist that showcases the variety and just how much the label has given to the world.

I feel really quite bad that I couldn't squeeze every great RT track onto this playlist, but if you go into the Rough Trade shop you can buy a 3 CD boxset that attempts more comprehensively to do just that. For now though, give this a whirl; 12 nuggets of alternative music that you definitely need to hear before you die...
